Are You Asking the Right Questions About Your Time Committments?
Monday Apr 24, 2023
Monday Apr 24, 2023
It's Time Management week! Join us as we explore different aspects of how you spend (or waste) your most valuable resource. This episode provides you with questions to help you check in before you commit- whether it's to a work deadline or baking cupcakes for the PTO bake sale.
As your capacity to manage your time grows, your bandwidth will increase, allowing you to take on more opportunities.
Work you love energizes you, work you don't depletes you. Choose wisely.
Ask these five questions before you begin doing anything:
Does it need to be done?
Do I want to do it?
Who else can do it?
Why does doing it matter to me?
How can I make it happen?

Green Infrastructure, Equity, and Innovation: Interview with Vincent Lee
Thursday Apr 20, 2023
Thursday Apr 20, 2023
This Earth Day, we focus on resilience. Vincent Lee shares how his work to develop green infrastructure is driving not just sustainable solutions, but cultivating wellbeing and health equity.
Innovation comes from being curious, open to different perspectives and persistent. These traits allow you to consider divergent ideas and keep trying when something doesn't work.
Look at strategies to include more green infrastructure vs. gray (traditional) in your projects. Green infrastructure is a cross disciplinary approach that can cost less in the end and is easier to maintain.
Co-Create solutions together. Expand your network of agencies and consultant partners to arrive at more expanded solutions.
Look for the secondary benefits of the solutions you provide to add more value and get more buy in.
Technology will help drive resilient solutions through AI and machine learning. See Arup Sponginess Studies here: https://www.arup.com/perspectives/sponginess-and-why-it-matters

The I’m Fine Culture as Success Saboteur
Friday Apr 14, 2023
Friday Apr 14, 2023
The meme of I'm Fine is getting old. Hiding behind your ability to drag ourselves across the finish line is no real accomplishment. In this episode, I explore what you might be avoiding because being fine keeps you stuck in overwhelm and burnout.
What is the secondary benefit you get from being stoic about your suffering? What do you get to avoid doing as a result?
Being "fine" let's you put the real things that would bring you peace and fulfillment in the too hard basket. You remain a victim to obligations instead.
Stop showing up compromised. Be willing to be vulnerable about what you need by taking time for self care and enforcing boundaries around your time and resources.
Empower others to find a solution, even if it means they might fail. You never learn the way if you never get to navigate.

Tempest in a Teapot: How to Release the Pressure without Turning Down the Heat
Wednesday Apr 05, 2023
Wednesday Apr 05, 2023
Are you a pressure bomb just waiting to explode? Feeling unseen, unheard, disrespected? Maybe you decided to just turn off the heat and live the jaded zombie life instead. This episode will help you keep momentum going without feeling so constrained by limitations in your career or your life.
When you have a lot of energy and passion, but don't feel that you are getting the opportunity to realize your potential, frustration builds like steam in a teapot because water in the vapor state is more expansive than in the liquid state.
The solution is to find a bigger pot, not to turn off the heat or let it build until it explodes.
Numbing out and being too busy are ways you turn off the heat to avoid feeling the pressure, but they cause a different kind of pain.
Being angry or overwhelming to others is a sign that you need a bigger pot because you are feeling constrained.
When you are more expansive, your energy is a beautiful swirl that draws in others and helps you meet them where they are.

FOMO is Gonna Get You (A Bad Conference Experience)
Thursday Mar 23, 2023
Thursday Mar 23, 2023
Trying to office and conference at the same time is a huge #workfail. Instead of micromanaging the day to day, trust your team to handle things in your absence. Then go network and knowledge harvest like it's your job,
Multitasking splits your attention and triggers a major stress responses that's a conference-goer buzzkill
Technology is you frenemy if you make yourself available for microinterruptions.
FOMO about the projects you're working on is really about your own need to feel needed and signals to your team that you don't really trust them.
Conference attendance is real work. It deserves your full attention.
Being on call and not setting boundaries with your staff isn't heroic- it's a leadership failure.
Conferences are a form of regeneration and bring you fresh perspective to apply on your current and future projects
Networking is as valuable as the knowledge gained, so don;t opt out of social opportunities or spend so much time on your phone you ignore the people IRL who could turn into powerful contacts.

Lucky? Don’t Leave Your Career to Chance
Wednesday Mar 15, 2023
Wednesday Mar 15, 2023
Luck favors the prepared. Meaning you gotta take action towards building the career you want. Every day. Otherwise, you end up with a career by default. And you have too much talent to sideline yourself that way.
There is no such thing as luck. When you build momentum, you land opportunities. When you take opportunities, things happen.
Every expert was once just a novice with a lot of passion.
Success comes by being persistent and courageous. Let your higher purpose embolden you.
Everybody has a purpose. It's fear disguised as imposter syndrome or busyness that keeps you from realizing it.
How you emerged from past fears is a clue to your unique superpower.
Take small actions to excercise your superpower every day every day. They add up.

Embrace Equity: International Women’s Day Interview with Erica Rooney
Wednesday Mar 08, 2023
Wednesday Mar 08, 2023
This year, we celebrate International Women's Day by Embracing Equity. That includes gender parity. Gender Equality Crusader Erica Rooney shares her wisdom on overcoming the glass ceilings and sticky floors women experience in the workplace.
Women need to be able to bring their whole self to work, not feel that they have to choose either caregiving or a career.
You can have it all- whatever "it all" looks like for you.
Your definition of success will change throughout your life.
Three roadblocks you put in your path to having it all are not knowing your worth, numbing out, and imposter syndrome.
Move past the roadblocks by naming them, questioning their validity, and shifting them to a more helpful thought.
You are not a buffet, you do not have to serve everybody.

Move from Toxic Positivity to a Supportive Workplace
Thursday Mar 02, 2023
Thursday Mar 02, 2023
Should the workplace always be a positive place? Glossing over negative or difficult experiences sends a message to deep-six instead of exploring them. Let's move past the "I'm fine" culture of toxic positivity and get real with each other.
Discern between appreciating the growth opportunity of a failure vs. pretending things are OK.
Negative experiences and emotions need to be tolerated. Moving past them means naming them, finding the root cause and opportunities for change.
Don't rush to slap a label on what you are going through. Be willing to be vulnerable and explore it.
Forcing the positive is judging the current situation.
Give comfort, free of the obligation of advice.
There is no expiration date on what you are working through. The integrity of the experience is more valuable than the speed of the bounce back.

Thursday Feb 23, 2023
Feeling stuck? Before you complain about your life circumstances, take a look in the mirror. That face staring back is your number one success obstacle. My guest Elizabeth Correia shares insights on finding and following your passion without waiting for an invitation.
Success is never about just doing one thing. Look for ways to cultivate spiritual growth, personal and professional development.
Even painful circumstances can become your comfort zone because they are familiar. Resist the temptation to stay in patterns you know.
Cultivate resilience so you can resist being taken out by failures that will occur as you move towards your success.
You really do know what you want to do, even if you haven;t realized it yet. Pay attention to where your attention is drawn and believe that you can make a career out of your interests.
Prepare your own table. Don't wait for someone else to clear the way for you.

Relating: How to have Authentic Connections to Others
Monday Feb 13, 2023
Monday Feb 13, 2023
Stop making your communication all about you- your need to share information, get feedback or drive different behavior. This episode is all about making an authentic connection and building relationships for better.
Always assume positive intent- even if you have a negative reaction. Then engage in a conversation with the other person before inventing your own story about what happened and why.
Avoid using violent or combative language that conveys judgement or contains accusations.
Being in conflict triggers the fight or flight response, automatically putting you in defensive mode where there is no space for creating solutions.
Use language that encourages the other person to engage and relate to you. Start by saying “I notice…” then “I feel…” then “I need…”
Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. Vulnerability creates authenticity. Authenticity is needed for trust Trust is the foundation of every relationship.
