Mythbusting: Egos and Sellouts
Monday Aug 23, 2021
Monday Aug 23, 2021
There is a lot of posturing in creative professions. We've learned to disdain what we consider to be the ego and the sellout- but what if we're getting it all wrong?
Far from being the big voice, the ego is actually what traps us in people pleasing, chasing career milestones and endlessly seeking validation. How can you detach from this and become more attuned to your mission than in meeting expectations?
You have one job- to live your mission of building a better world by using your unique gifts and talents. Focus on that- no matter what.
Impostor syndrome is actually your ego trying to keep you safe by playing small. Move past that by embracing what you do know. Even if you can teach one thing to one person, you are succeeding.
Integrity is not about making a stand for your issues. It's about bringing wholeness to a situation. That means factoring in other points of view to have a more complete picture.
You can't bring integrity is you don't have integrity. Maintain positive energy and focus on the mission be making sure your own physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs are met, you feel grounded and have clarity.

Building for a Better World: Interview with Blaine Brownell
Thursday Aug 19, 2021
Thursday Aug 19, 2021
In my interview with Blaine Brownell, we discuss the role of materiality in sustainability, well being, equity and planetary health.
Cultivate relationships with people who can mentor you- then act on their advice to create your own opportunities. Think about what you create as a "demo album" and put it out there to be discovered.
Do the work you are passionate about and it will lead you to discovering what you are meant to contribute.
Sharing your interests creates a reciprocal relationship. You learn from those you teach.
World changing design is vitally responsible. It combines boldness and the willingness to take safe risks with sustainable innovation. Put together diverse teams and allow those who will use your work to inform it.
Pick and issue and go deep to see if you an move the needle beyond what a system or checklist might require.
It's not enough to only consider sustainability at a small scale. Think about how you project can be viewed within large scale assessments to maintain overall impact to one planet.
Be willing to do research not just for the issues of your project, but to solve some of the wicked problems.

Space Shamanism: Using Salutogenesis in Your Work
Tuesday Aug 17, 2021
Tuesday Aug 17, 2021
I am a space shaman- you can be too (maybe you already are). In this Episode, I discuss the healing power of design and why we all need to offer more wellness resources to the users of our buildings.
In today's pandemic-ridden world, stress levels are higher than ever. How can we offer restorative environments:
Be committed to learning about salutogenic measures we can take and how stress affects people. Take the opportunity to talk about it when ever you can, even if your delivery sn't perfect, you are advancing this important cause.
Think of yourself as a shaman, diagnosing the needs of users and offering spatial elements as medicine. Whether it's enhanced sense of coherence, the safety of prospect and refuge, the resonance of biophilia, the empowerment of self efficacy or the restoration of the relaxation response.
Pick a current project and think about how you could introduce three salutogenic elements into it today to help people move towards wellness. These can be small moves, everything counts.

The Health Safety and Welfare of Experience
Thursday Aug 12, 2021
Thursday Aug 12, 2021
We all know we have a duty to protect the public's health safety and welfare in our work. But let's take it beyond codes and look at the ethics behind HSW through the lens of user experience.
There are no current code requirements that consider user experience. However, the more we learn, the more it becomes imperative that we design buildings that empower people to be their best selves.
Always tie project goals and ROI back to experience
Do your research to understand specific design strategies that will impact users in a positive way and show the metrics behind your approach
Once you do the homework, you've found your truth. Integrate that authenticity with a bigger purpose
Share the truth from a place of love with your clients, not from the intellectual high ground or as an activist trying to force beliefs on others.

Ask Me Anything: Time Management Edition

Monday Aug 09, 2021
How do I get my life in order? Should I respond to round the clock contacts from my boss?
Good questions! In this episode I answer questions from our audience on time management. We cover:
How to put support resources in place by leveraging help from friends or family, or by trading time with other parents.
Considering who else besides you could do something and then helping them get to the point where they can replace you at doing the task
Grounding techniques to tame the chaos and help you be more creative
The importance of gratitude for finding ways to advance your career goals even when everything seems hopeless
How to communicate and enforce your boundaries.

Shine Your Light
Thursday Aug 05, 2021
Thursday Aug 05, 2021
Ever felt simultaneously like you were too much AND not enough?
Believe it or not, it's less about what other people are saying or doing and more about the story you drag around with you everywhere. In this episode, we crack that open so you can unapologetically be the you you were always meant to be.
Learn why authenticity is one of the most important ways to connect with others, and why saying no is part of being authentic
Understand that the guilt or shame you have at saying no or being too good is coming from an internal space.
How others perceive you is based on how you perceive yourself- start seeing the positive and reacting accordingly and watch others mirror you.

Delegation and the Art of Receiving Time
Monday Aug 02, 2021
Monday Aug 02, 2021
Hey all you lone wold control freak types- I'm talking to you this episode. You know how you always feel like you're drowning in work? Time to let go of the reins and start delegating.
Before you start hyperventilating, it's OK to let someone help you. All this and more is detailed in my book Time Builder, now available on my website. Here's my top takeaways to make it work:
Delegation empowers someone else while helping to ease your load. Done right, it's a double blessing.
No one else will love your project the way you do- they may love it as much or more though. Your work is magnified when it has a ripple effect- and that ripple can't happen until you throw the pebble into the water.
Delegation is a skill. It requires building trust and clearly communicating what needs to be done when and why.
Ease your worries about work quality by providing feedback along the way along with lost of praise and constructive criticism.
Manage time spent by providing milestones and checkpoints so you can make sure neither too much or too little work is being done. Calibrate these deadlines to the skill set of your delegate, not based on how long it would take you to complete the task.

Stop Spuddling! Expand Your Capacity
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Spuddle may just be my new favorite word. And when we're talking bandwidth, that tendency we have to make big deals out of the small stuff just so we can stay too busy to actually achieve anything is exactly what's siphoning off your capacity to handle what you really want to be doing.
Get smart about ways to expand your capacity:
Be more discerning about what you choose to take on
Never run yourself at 100% on the regular- shoot for using about 70% of yoru bandwith at a time
Be a gear, not a hamster by building yourself a support system
Eliminate microdistractions that are siphoning off your time and energy

Get Unstuck:How to Release Anxiety and Access Your Flow State
Monday Jul 26, 2021
Monday Jul 26, 2021
You know what's a huge time waster? Anxiety. That paralyzed state you get into where you judge based on past failure and worry yourself through endless future scenarios. Clearly no way to be creative.
Anxiety locks you out of your flow state because it keeps you from exploring possibilities. Start riding that flow state wave again by:
Learning how to embrace the endless possibilities of the present moment without getting all judgy.
Why just getting started shuts down anxiety because taking action helps shift you from a scary unknown to a fun problem to solve.
Leading with your heart will always help you find a way
Treat everything as if it were an experiment. Shift your thinking from how can I? to I wonder if?
