Make 2022 The Year You Stop Proving Yourself
Monday Jan 03, 2022
Monday Jan 03, 2022
Ta-da! You did the thing. But at what cost and for what reason? This is your year to stop jumping through hoops and move forward with momentum and aligned action.
Stop emphasizing doing over being. Performance is not a measure of worth, accomplishing what only you can do is.
As "what is true for me?" When you follow your own path, you always have momentum even if you face setbacks. Failure is only catastrophic when you tie your success to someone else's approval.
Stop using busyness as an excuse not to dare greatly.
Ask for what you really want instead of playing games to avoid judgement.
Doing what you don't want to do to get approval is a lot like prostitution,
Climbing onto a pedestal through proving yourself is only asking to be knocked down the minute you make a mistake (and you will). Take your ego out of the equation and you'll never have to apologize for what you work to achieve even if things go wrong.

Get More Results With Less Effort
Tuesday Dec 28, 2021
Tuesday Dec 28, 2021
Taking inventory of your year? It's not about what you did or didn't accomplish, but how you felt about it.
Think about how you spend your energy. Are doing things out of obligation instead of because they give you joy? What can you eliminate?
Success is living in joy. When you live in joy, your energy regenerates and grows. When you don't, your energy is scattered, depleted and stagnant.
Competency is comforting. We make ourselves busy with tasks we are good at doing so we don't have time to take on things that are more risky, but will bring us more reward. This sense of unworthiness to live our dreams leads us to hide behind the busyness and procrastinate.
Surround yourself with five people who you interact with regularly who will keep you focused, help you find courage, and re-frame situations to keep you feeling positive and moving forward.
Keep your energy positive by celebrating the wins instead of moving on to some new form of validation.

Control: The Anti-Fun
Monday Dec 20, 2021
Monday Dec 20, 2021
Control is not a measure of confidence, it's a measure of fear. Fear of not meeting expectations, or getting the desired outcome. Fear of failure. In this episode, we'll explore how having more fun can unlock creative potential and leave us all with a whole lot less stress.
Giving up control allows us to see other possibilities than what we thought we wanted. In the flow of the present moment, we can pivot to receive all that is available for the situation.
Trying to control outcomes and prove yourself is negative energy and others will respond negatively to you as a result.
Try looking for ways to have fun in any situation- especially ones that are fraught with conflict or tension. Notice how your focus on having a positive experience (not a positive outcome) shifts everything.

What I Should Have Said: Impacts of Anger, Guilt and Shame
Monday Dec 13, 2021
Monday Dec 13, 2021
Anger, guilt and shame are the root cause of all communication problems. This episode explores ways to stop framing things through the lens of our own insecurities and emotional reactions. Stop being triggered and start being curious about exploring the possibilities.
Your negative self image will lead you to fear negative outcomes. This looks like reading into what others say and do to reinforce your own inner narrative.
Don't let your ego lead the way. Show up focused on the purpose and ideas to avoid emotional triggers if you are met with skepticism or challenges.
Show up ready to explore what's possible. Remember that failure is how we learn and that every idea or solutions has pros and cons.
Ask questions instead of making assumptions. Bad intentions will come to light and well intended criticism will surface for discussion so that ideas can be elevated and explored, not shot down.

The Question that Builds Trust
Wednesday Dec 08, 2021
Wednesday Dec 08, 2021
What do you know? When was the last time you asked that question? A question this powerful should be asked on the regular. It gives agency by showing that you value someone's knowledge and want to hear from them. Not their opinion, but what they know.
The number one reason people change jobs or quit being engaged is because they feel they are missing a supportive and open communication channel. You know the channel is working when you can comfortably discuss hard topics that require vulnerability.
We all want an advocate- show others that their contributions are visible and skills are important by acknowledging them.
Once you have good communication, you can establish psychological safety and offer growth opportunities.
Asking someone what they know works like magic to strengthen trust, empathy and social connection.

Rising Above Criticism and Setbacks
Thursday Dec 02, 2021
Thursday Dec 02, 2021
Is this you: externally motivated, in fear of judgement, playing by someone else's rules because you think that's the only way to get ahead?
Get out of the disempowerment of victim mentality that keeps you in survival mode and in a state of manipulating and being manipulated by others.
You can't be creative if you don't embrace failure and make bold gestures in life.
Remember the brightest lights cast the darkest shadow and that instead of avoiding criticism to expect it. You're not for everyone, but it's better to be authentically you than someone who never stands out because she never stands for anything.
Adopting a witness mindset allows you to be a curious learner who lives fully in the present moment and learns from every experience - positive or negative.

Like a Mother: How work is being revolutionized
Monday Nov 29, 2021
Monday Nov 29, 2021
Where are all the women in our profession? So many fade away due to lack of support and family responsibilities- but not the women in the Mothers in Architecture group. Meet the three founders who took a stand to keep moms in architecture and started a movement where women model for one another how to have a career on your own terms.
Women's careers face unique challenges. By being part of a support group, you have a safe space to be vulnerable and reconcile being a professional with being a mother.
Raise the bar on what expectations should be instead of trying to cope with the status quo. You deserve to be supported in the career you want to have.
Mothers are often workplace trailblazers. The issues they fought for around flex time and working from home have now become workplace standards that benefit everyone, so never feel like because something isn't the norm today that it's not worth fighting for.
We all need to stop romanticizing overwork. Learn to set boundaries and surround yourself with people who keep you grounded in why you need to maintain them (your well-being).
Careers can follow many different paths. Your goals should align with what you want- not someone else's structure.

The Power of Praise
Thursday Nov 18, 2021
Thursday Nov 18, 2021
Be the one who takes your team from good to great by harnessing the power of praise to help recognize and amplify the skill sets of coworkers and clients.
Praise is not flattery. Be authentic and mention specific things that someone did well and how those things impacted the outcome.
When you call attention to an accomplishment, you raise awareness of the skills involved in that person's mind, which helps them focus more on developing those skills. This happens through a brain mechanism called the Reticular Activator which focuses attention.
Praise raises the energy and joy of team, which then pumps up creativity and adds ease to the work being done to the point that it doesn't feel like work anymore.
Take the praise challenge. Pick three people to praise over the next two days and share the impact it had on instagram. Tag me @architectingpodcast and I'll share with the rest of our community.

Reclaiming White Space on Your Calendar
Monday Nov 15, 2021
Monday Nov 15, 2021
Whew! Another workday so filled with meetings, there was no time left for ...work? And what about how exhausting it is to have to be "on" all day? Listen in to learn how to just say no to energy sapping time sucks.
Unhook yourself from obligation energy and the accompanying guilt and shame. Look at your own story that's making you feel you can;t say no as well as how you are tapping into other people's stories about what you "should" be doing.
Be clear about what you need out of your day and claim it on your calendar. Block focused time based on your most productive period of the day, schedule time for tasks instead of making lists, prioritize breaks and time for a nourishing lunch by adding them on the calendar.
Train people on what to expect. If it's clear you are not available for back to back meetings or meetings scheduled without asking you first, then they will learn to respect your time more.

Essentials of Psychological Safety
Thursday Nov 04, 2021
Thursday Nov 04, 2021
Understanding psychological safety is your new stealth tool to effective team work and having a high performance design career.
The foundation of being able to work effectively (and innovatively) is to first build trust. Trust comes when everyone feels supported doing meaningful work, comfortable sharing their ideas, can fail without feeling like a failure and feels included.
We all bring our own story and meanings to the way we interpret the world. It's important to become more conscious of our own and others' tendency to do this so that we can communicate more effectively
Practice active listening, instead of just waiting to make your own points.
Teamwork is about letting go of individual inputs and outputs in favor of focusing collectively on the outcomes. This means balancing the expansiveness of the beginner's mind with the reductive power of expertise.
Always make others feel appreciated and included by specifically noticing how their contributions helped the team succeed.
