Causing Effect: Being a Catalyst for Change

Creating change starts with inspiring people, but needs to include helping them move past doubts and fear of change. That means you need to be the catalyst- the constant that produces change without being changed. Listen in to learn how.
Catalysts show others what's possible by bringing together the right mix of people and activities and activating them.
Action happens naturally when there is alignment about what change needs to happen and why.
People may initially buy in but eventually resist change because it moves them out of their comfort zone. Your job is to keep holding the vision for them and giving them permission to step outside the system.
Go from cause and effect to causing an effect by helping people to feel confident and inspired even as they encounter doubts, fears or lack of acceptance from their peer group. Remember that everyone feels more comfortable when they return to their set point, even if it's not serving them.

Angela

Don't let the doubters bring you down. You know, the ones who say you can't do it, or that you're wrong to even try. You have dreams bigger than you for a reason. Here's how to make them a reality.
Being proactive is an internal process. Become a dreamer who does by getting clarity on your purpose and taking aligned action.
Being reactive is an external process, but it doesn't have to be a passive one. You have better solutions when you've been proactive first.
Question the premise and be more aware of the unconscious "protocols" in our culture so you can actively change them.
The bigger the dream, the more you have to fail to make it come true.
Hold your ground, be solution oriented and include like minded people.

Angela

Architecture is Advocacy: Don’t Mute Your Mike

Health, safety and welfare issues extend to wellbeing. As architects, our work impacts people spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. We have the ability to be unflinching advocates who catalyze positive change- who's in?
Architecture is advocacy. Never walk away from your power to have a positive impact
Get the credentials you need (license at a minimum) so that you have the authority and agency to take a stand.
Help develop or evaluate codes and standards as well as local zoning or housing policies.
Take it meta by looking at issues that are bigger than a particular project.
Understand how decisions are made and co-create priorities with your clients, including establishing non-negotiables.
Test new ideas through simulations or augmented reality to overcome fear of change.
Tie project goals to ROI by using metrics your client already relies upon and showing how design decisions can improve them.

Leadership Looks Like This

Do you know the difference between mentoring, coaching, management and leadership? While all are important, there is movement in leadership. It is focused on the collective and taking them somewhere they couldn't get on their own, not on nurturing an individual. Listen in to learn more about following and being a leader.
Leadership is distinct from other individuals you might seek out in your career. Mentors provide guidance and advice. Coaches help you set goals, get skills, and hold you accountable. Managers provide directives, assign roles and set deadlines.
Leaders act for the collective and hold a vision while showing the way. Following them is a choice.
Leaders question the premise, they don't operate within the status quo.
Leaders take you out of your comfort zone and help you see what's possible.
Leaders are wayshowers and unflinching advocates.
If you don't take a stand for what you believe, no one knows if they want to follow you.

Who knew giving back could have payback? If you're tired of waiting around for that engraved invite to learn new skills, take matters into your own hands. In this episode, I show you how to gain valuable skills in the real world that have tangible results. Oh, and they might just be your career value add too.
Upskilling is the act of learning new skills that help you perform better at your job. Skills range from technology use, to analytics/research, to soft skills and leadership.
You only have so much bandwidth. Use it wisely by engaging in strategic volunteer opportunities that use your current skills while allowing you to cultivate new ones.
Volunteering is your free training ground for skills you want to learn. You'll have opportunities to engage in activities at a senior level in ways you'd never get to on the job.
Life really is a box of chocolates, you need to sample a variety of skills to get clarity on which ones you want to develop further.

Whether you're looking for new work, a promotion, or a better way to talk about yourself, you need to listen to this episode. You'll learn how to get clarity on your message and mission and find the alignment you want based on your leadership and collaboration styles.
Leverage the through line of your career experiences and accomplishments to date by writing a mission statement.
Never refer to yourself in the third person and the past tense.
Focus on outcomes and their ripple effects to show the impact of your work, not just that you got it done.
Use descriptive language to represent your leadership and collaboration styles. Ask others about theirs to manage expectations and ensure a good fit.

The Art of Doing Less Better

The good enough life isn't really good enough. If you're feeling stuck on that plateau because you just can't find the capacity to do even more, listen in to learn how to be an advocate for better without being exhausted.
Feed your creativity by placing yourself in situations that are inspiring, playful, luxurious and beautiful.
Your expertise is your invitation to do less better instead of working harder.
When you succumb to stress and fear, you lose sight of your value.
No one wants to succeed if it means adding more stress and work to your life. If you believe that's your path to success, you won't be motivated to ever get there.

Part 2 of the Wellness series explores how to break free from toxic stress in your life. Hypnotherapist Claire Oldham-West shares ways to eliminate the limiting stories we tell, work through trauma, and heal from physical pain and injury.
Please grab your spot in Wellness for the Working World to hear Claire's entire interview which included juicy topics like: why you don't believe you can do something, how to stop numbing out and start feeling, the role of "incorrect learning" in shaping our stories, Ways we are being hypnotized in our culture and how to break free, and how hypnotherapy can be used to empower yourself.
You have the resources within you to heal from anything. You just need to move past your limitations.
Hypnotherapy helps you access the deep relaxation you need to begin healing.
Many people carry trauma around like a backpack and it's weighing them down.
You aren't living in the present when you are triggered by traumas and limiting beliefs. Once you access the story, you can rewrite it.
We all need to feel loved and safe. Connecting to your subconscious mind allows you to access, beliefs, habits and behaviors that are holding you back.
You can feel stress in your physical body.

I'm taking a stand for self-care. Join me for the wellness series where I interview wellness experts, starting with Emotional Eating expert Paula Yolles. Learn why we eat when we're tired, how stress triggers us and how poor gut health affects anxiety and depression.
Emotional eating has root causes in traumatic experience. Healing it cannot be based on diet and exercise alone.
Retraining the brain allows the association of food with control to fade.
Food is not a substitute for self care
Eating the wrong foods creates a gut imbalance that not only creates digestive issues, but emotional ones.
It's not about willpower or forcing yourself to do anything
Be present and mindful when eating to calm and clear the mind as well as experience lasting satiation.

Would you swipe left on your current job? What about future prospects? You get it all wrong when you only think about following the rules of a career path that someone else told you you should want. Let's try a different perspective that's more focused on the relationship you want to have.
Do you want to be together? If the personality/culture of the firm isn't suited to yours, it's never going to work.
What do you want to create with this company? If they aren't going in the direction you want to go, or can't commit the resources to initiatives, it's splitsville.
What do you want to explore with them? How can you impact the industry together?
How can you help them expand? Just like love, it's a two way street.
