We live in a culture that forces extroverted interactions, even though most of us are introverts. Listen in for my pro tips on how to network effectively at conferences without feeling fake.
- Introverts navigate the world differently from extroverts. Because interacting with others depletes our energy, we need to find opportunities for restoration.
- Don't feel pressured to over-socialize. Use passive moments like listening to presentations as opportunities for solitude by sitting by yourself.
- Nix the awkward small talk. Instead, ask meaningful questions to targeted people. By expressing genuine interest in someone's work, you make authentic connections.
- Find alone time during breaks. This can look like sitting in a quiet corner, going outside, or even back to your hotel rooms.
- Find things in common to discuss during networking events. Ask open ended questions.
- Practice gracefully ending conversations that have run their course.
